Installation of Electronic Security (Alarm) Access Control & CCTV Systems
In Western Australia, individuals who, for remuneration, consult, install, repair or maintain security alarm systems, CCTV for security purpose, or electronic locks are required to hold a security licence.
Those individuals must work for a business which holds a Security Agent’s licence.
WA Police Licencing have introduced a new requirement for anyone applying for a Security Officer or Crowd Controllers Licence to undertake a competency examination.
This new requirement is now part Regulation 17 of the Security and Related Activities (Control) Regulations)
Following consultation between WAPOL Police Licensing Services, Financial, Administrative & Professional Services Training Council and the Security Agents Institute of WA, a rigorous testing system has been developed and SAIWA has been selected to establish a dedicated Security Competency Testing Centre at its office in Perth.

The Mass Gatherings Advisory Group (MGAG – a sub-set of the Australia-New Zealand Counter-Terrorism Committee –ANZCTC) recently issued guidelines for planning for and dealing with improvised explosive device (IED) warnings or incidents. MGAG previously developed and released similar guidelines relating to the active shooter (also now known as active armed offender re: edged weapon threats, etc) which can be seen here.

The West Australia Police are establishing a register of CCTV systems within the state, registration details will be held centrally in a protected database, the database will be used to map the location of CCTV systems for use by Police investigators. CCTV footage is an invaluable tool for investigators and we are seeking your help to find out where these CCTV systems are.
The information contained in this amendment document for the purpose of reducing false duress alarms is intended for security installers of electronic alarms. The Western Australia Police (WAPOL), in consultation with the Alarm Response Working Group (ARWG), has amended existing strategies to reduce the number of unwarranted Duress alarms being passed onto Police communications.
